ACIPHEX is sold as PARIET in Canada. PARIET (rabeprazole sodium) is an antisecretory compound (substituted benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the gastric H+, K+-ATPase at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell. Because this enzyme is regarded as the acid (proton) pump within the parietal cell, PARIET rabeprazole sodium has been characterized as a gastric proton pump inhibitor. PARIET rabeprazole sodium blocks the final step of gastric acid secretion and produces dose-related sustained inhibition of both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion.
